At $109/year, five years of YNAB costs you over five hundred dollars and counting.
YNAB Alternative
Updated July 15, 2026 · Simply Finance
The YNAB alternative without the $109/year subscription.
YNAB taught a lot of people to budget. But it costs $109 a year, wants a bank connection, and stops working the moment you stop paying. Simply Finance is the lighter, private alternative: free to use, no bank sync, and your data encrypted on your own device.
- ✓Free to use
- ✓No subscription, ever
- ✓No bank sync needed
- ✓End-to-end encrypted
One unlock. No renewal. The same price in year five as it was on day one.
An app that tracks your bills should not become one of your bills. With no subscription, the incentive to monetize your data, show ads, or upsell tiers disappears.
YNAB vs Simply Finance
Both help you tell your money where to go. The difference is the price model, the privacy model, and how much method you have to learn before it pays off.

Why people switch from YNAB
Most people who move to Simply Finance are not unhappy with budgeting—they are unhappy with the bill and the friction. The recurring reasons we hear:
- The subscription adds up. $109 a year, forever, to track money you already earned.
- Bank sync breaks. Relinking, duplicates, and miscategorized transactions turn a two-minute habit into a chore.
- The method is heavy. Strict envelope budgeting is powerful, but a lot of people just want spent, remaining, and over.
- Privacy. They would rather their transaction history never sit on someone else’s server.
What is different by design
Simply Finance is deliberately simpler. Manual entry is treated as a feature, not a limitation: you log a transaction in under three seconds, and because nothing is imported, there is nothing to reconcile or clean up later.
On top of the basics you get plain-language answers—how long your money would last and where your balance is heading, from your real income and spending—the answers that actually reduce money anxiety, and that a bank-synced dashboard never shows you.
Who Simply Finance is not for
We would rather you choose the right tool than churn. Stay with YNAB if:
You love strict envelope budgeting and rule-based assignment, you want automatic bank imports across many accounts, or you budget jointly and need a shared multi-user workspace. Simply Finance is single-owner, manual-first, and intentionally lean.
How to switch in an afternoon
Export your YNAB history
In YNAB on the web, export the Register CSV for the accounts and history you want to bring over.
Preview, then import a copy
In Simply Finance, open Settings → Import from Another App → YNAB. Review the accounts, categories, dates, and duplicates before confirming.
Try it with your real history
Check the imported ledger, set the few category limits you care about, and see the answers Simply Finance produces. YNAB remains untouched while you decide.
Switch only when you are ready
Keep using Simply Finance free while you evaluate it. Cancel YNAB only after you are comfortable with the imported history and manual-first workflow.
FAQ
Do you sell my data?
No—but that is the low bar, and the wrong question. “We don’t sell your data” still means a company can read it: your full history sits on their servers, one breach or subpoena from exposure. Simply Finance can’t sell what it can’t see. Your data is end-to-end encrypted on your device, and the sync relay only ever holds scrambled ciphertext—no readable balances, merchants, or amounts. Nothing to sell, nothing for an employee to peek at, nothing legible to leak.
Is Simply Finance really free?
Yes. The app is free to use; a single optional $4.99 in-app purchase adds sync across your devices and detailed reports. There is no subscription and no renewal. Once you unlock it, it is yours on that account forever.
Can I import my data from YNAB?
Yes. Export a Register CSV from YNAB, then choose YNAB under Import from Another App. Simply Finance previews the transactions, accounts, categories, date range, and duplicates before saving anything.
Does it use the envelope budgeting method like YNAB?
No. Simply Finance uses simple per-category monthly budgets that show spent, remaining, and over at a glance. If you love strict envelope methodology, YNAB may suit you better. If you found that system heavy, this is the lighter alternative.
Does Simply Finance connect to my bank?
No, and that is intentional. There is no Plaid, no bank login, and no aggregator. You log spending manually in under three seconds, so there are no broken feeds, duplicates, or miscategorized imports to clean up.
Is my financial data private?
Yes. Your data lives on your device and is end-to-end encrypted before any sync. There is no signup and no account profile. Sync relays only ever see ciphertext they cannot read.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Simply Finance is local-first, so it works fully offline. Sync is optional and only moves encrypted data between your own devices.
