The honest trade-off

You record what happened. In return, there is no aggregator to read your history, break a connection, duplicate transactions, or recategorize spending behind your back.

How budgeting works without a feed

Start with the current balance of each account you care about. From there, each expense or income entry changes that local ledger. Recurring bills keep predictable activity visible, while budgets show what has been spent and what remains.

For routine purchases, you can forward transaction alerts through device automation. That captures the information you choose without handing a third party standing access to your bank.

What never enters the system

  • Your bank username and password.
  • An aggregator access token.
  • A required email address or profile.
  • A readable copy of your synced financial history.

The sync and privacy guide explains the encryption boundary and what the optional relay can see.

Choose the trade-off that fits you

Simply Finance fits people who want a deliberate money routine, travel between banks or currencies, dislike subscription pricing, or do not want a financial aggregator in the middle.

It is not a replacement for investment aggregation, shared household workspaces, or automatic bank reconciliation. See the YNAB comparison and Monarch comparison before switching if those features matter to you.

Questions about no-bank budgeting

Can a budget app work without connecting to a bank?

Yes. Add your account balances once, then record transactions as they happen or import supported text and CSV data. Budgets, recurring bills, reports, and runway calculations work from that local ledger.

Does Simply Finance use Plaid or another aggregator?

No. There is no Plaid, MX, open-banking connection, or bank credential flow in Simply Finance.

Is manual tracking slower?

It asks for a small daily habit in exchange for control. The add flow is amount, category, and save; on iPhone and iPad, transaction-alert automation can reduce repetitive entry without a bank login.

What if automatic bank import is essential to me?

Choose a bank-connected product. Simply Finance is intentionally for people who value privacy and deliberate tracking more than automatic feeds.

Does it require an account?

No email, password, or profile is required. Optional sync uses a recovery phrase rather than a readable financial account on Simply Finance servers.
